Here is Part 1 of the 7-part series “An in depth look at your 7 Main Chakras”. Chakras are the energy centers in your body. Believe it or not they play a big role in our day-to-day life. From the energy levels you have, to the energy you give off when other people are around you. Chakras also play a large part in our health and how energy flows in our bodies. If one is out of balance it can lead to mental and physical issues. The root chakra is located at the base of the spine, near the perineum, and is associated with the color red. It serves as the foundation for the entire chakra system and is often seen as the source of one’s vitality and stability.
Basic aspects of the Root Chakra are:
- Element: Earth – The root chakra is connected to the element of Earth, symbolizing stability and grounding.
- Function: The primary function of the root chakra is to provide a sense of security, stability, and a connection to the physical world. It influences your basic survival needs, including food, shelter, and a sense of belonging.
- Balanced Energy: When the root chakra is balanced, it promotes a feeling of safety, confidence, and a strong connection to the present moment. You feel grounded and secure in your daily life.
Here are some common symptoms of an underactive root chakra:

Balancing the root chakra is essential for achieving a sense of stability, security, and overall well-being. This chakra is the foundation of the entire enery system, and when it’s balanced, it can help you feel grounded and secure. Here are some methods to balance the root chakra:
- Meditation: meditation involves focusing your attention on the location of the root chakra (at the base of the spine) and visualizing a red, grounding energy. Breathe deeply and rhythmically, allowing yourself to feel rooted to the earth. Mantras like “LAM” (the seed sound associated with the root chakra) can be used during meditation. I wrote a blog post about meditation here if you aren’t sure where to start.
- Yoga: Certain yoga poses, such as Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose), and Malasana (Yogi Squat), can help balance the root chakra. These poses promote grounding and stability. Incorporate these poses into your yoga practice to enhance root chakra balance.
- Grounding Exercises: Spending time in nature and connecting with the earth can help. Walk barefoot on the grass, or sand. Gardening, hiking, or simply sitting or lying on the ground can also have grounding effects. I wrote a blog post about grounding here. Also, if you are in a city or a climate that is difficult to get your feet on the earth, grounding mats are a great substitute. I’ve linked my favorite on here
- Aromatherapy: Using grounding essential oils like patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood, and frankincense can promote root chakra balance. Inhaling these scents through diffusers or applying diluted oils to the skin can be beneficial. You can take a look at one of my favorite diffusers here
- Color Therapy: The root chakra is associated with the color red. Surrounding yourself with red objects or clothing or visualizing a vibrant red light at the base of your spine during meditation, can help balance this chakra.
- Affirmations: Repeating affirmations specific to the root chakra can be helpful. Statements like “I am safe,” “I am secure,” or “I am grounded” can reinforce a sense of stability and security.
- Crystal Healing: Crystals like red jasper, hematite, and black tourmaline are associated with the root chakra. Carrying or wearing these stones can help balance and ground your energy.
- Nutrition: Eating root vegetables like carrots, beets, and potatoes can provide physical nourishment for the root chakra. Consuming these foods mindfully can also help balance the chakra.
- Chakra Balancing Sessions: Consider working with an energy healer or a practitioner who specializes in chakra balancing. They can help identify and address imbalances in your root chakra through energy healing techniques.
- Mindfulness Practices: Cultivate mindfulness and present-moment awareness in your daily life. Practicing mindfulness can help you connect with the physical world and alleviate excessive worries about the future or past.
- Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical exercise can help channel and balance your root chakra’s energy. Activities like walking, jogging, and other forms of exercise can promote stability and grounding.
- Wear Red: Wearing Red can help connect you to your red energy center!
Balancing the root chakra may take time and consistency. Be patient with yourself as you work on these practices and incorporate them into your daily routine. Over time, you should begin to feel more grounded, secure, and stable in your life. If you are at the point that you have tried everything to feel better, gone to doctors and no one can figure out what is going on with you.
