7 years ago, I was a preoccupied Business Owner, Wife and new Mom and just diagnosed with Graves’ Disease (which I wrote a blog about here.) In the most amazing firsts with my daughter, I always found myself somewhere else and never in the moment. Things that I had to do, somewhere I had to be etc. Not to mention the negative self-talk that runs in and out of our heads without even realizing it. I was unhappy with Myself. I started to notice the incessant chatter running through my head that would make me mad at my husband for no good reason or upset with my employees.

I started to realize these thoughts were mine, and if I could ‘think” them, I could stop thinking them.

We don’t realize that our thoughts are a program that continuously runs in the background. We picked up these behaviors from our experiences during our younger years. They are defense mechanisms that the ego uses to keep us “safe”. Instead of seeing a situation for what it is we start reaching in and flipping things to fit our narrative and perception.

If we can slow our thoughts down just enough to be conscious of what we are thinking, we can most definitely change our lives.

“When you Change the Way, you look at things, The Things you look at Change” The late great Wayne Dyer

(I’ll link a few of his books below)

Wayne Dyer also famously tweaked the phrase by Claude Debussy.

‘”It’s the space between the notes that make the music, and it’s the space between your thoughts that’s called the gap, the space of nothing, No thing. It is here where you have the power to consciously change your thoughts, and it takes practice. That practice is called Meditation.

Your thought patterns aren’t the only things that meditation can help fix. Below is a list of the benefits of implementing a meditation practice.

  1. Stress Reduction: Meditation is a proven stressbuster. By taking just a few minutes each day to quiet your mind, you can lower stress levels, which is crucial for maintaining your sanity in a hectic household. Lowering stress also helps keep our Bodys healthy.
  2. Increased Patience: Parenting can be demanding, and sometimes it feels like your patience is constantly being tested. Meditation helps you cultivate patience, so you can respond to challenges with calm and grace.
  3. Improved Focus: With so many tasks vying for your attention, it’s easy to feel scattered. Meditation enhances your ability to concentrate, making you more efficient in managing your family’s needs.
  4. Better Sleep: A well-rested mother is a happier mother. Meditation can help you fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper, more restful slumber. I have a blog here about nighttime routines.
  5. Enhanced Emotional Well-being: Motherhood often comes with a rollercoaster of emotions. Meditation promotes emotional stability, helping you navigate the highs and lows of family life.

Getting Started with Meditation: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Find a Quiet Space: Always lead with gratitude, it puts your energy into a higher vibration. Choose a peaceful spot in your home where you can sit or lie down comfortably without distractions. It could be a corner of your bedroom or a cozy nook in the living room. Even sitting up in your bed with everything turned off for 5 minutes before you go to sleep. Remember Meditation Doesn’t have to be a huge production. As long as you are in a quiet space in a comfortable position, focused on going inward, you are meditating.
  2. Set Realistic Goals: Start with just a few minutes a day. As little as 5-10 minutes can make a difference. Gradually, you can extend your meditation time as you become more comfortable with the practice.
  3. Select a Comfortable Posture: You don’t need to sit cross-legged on the floor if it’s not comfortable for you. You can meditate in a chair, on your couch, or even lying down. The key is to find a position that allows you to relax without falling asleep. A meditation pillow is also a great option.
  4. Focus on Your Breath: Close your eyes and take a few deep, slow breaths. Then, allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm. Pay attention to the sensation of your breath entering and leaving your body. If you start to notice your mind racing turn your focus back to your breath. A 4 second count in through your nose, hold for 4 seconds, out through your nose for 4 seconds, empty for 4 seconds and repeat, is a great breathing exercise start with.
  5. Use Guided Meditations: If you’re new to meditation, consider using guided meditation apps or recordings. They can provide structure and guidance as you start your practice.
